Elizabeth frowned at herself in her mirror. She had taken extra care to look nice that morning, and she thought the effort had paid off. She was wearing a new velvet ribbon on her blond ponytail, a plaid jumper, and a Victorian lace blouse that looked old-fashioned and pretty. She hoped Jeffrey noticed the pearl pin at her throat. She had worn it every day since Saturday.
The truth was, she hadn't seen that much of Jeffrey lately. Mostly it was her own fault. She had been so busy working on her application, and the time they had spent together they went over her writing samples. But Elizabeth had been especially preoccupied since her talk with Lila Fowler the day before at lunchtime. Not that she thought Lila had any business suggesting there was anything going on between Enid and Jeffrey. That was crazy! Enid was her dearest friend, and Jeffreyâwell, Jeffrey just wouldn't play around on her. Besides, he insisted that he had left her a note. It must've gotten lost somehow. He hadn't stood her up on purpose!
She touched the pearl pin and started thinking. Of course, things were different now. She was talking about going away for a long, long time, and Jeffrey must be wondering what things would be like once they were separated. If she won the Margaret Sterne Memorial Prize, if she really left Sweet Valley, what would happen then? She couldn't imagine Jeffrey going out with someone elseâleast of all Enid. But she had to admit that it would be unreasonable to expect him to sit home and wait for her.
And she had to admit that she sometimes wondered what would happen if she met some glamorous European boy at Interlochen. Someone who could take her skiing in the Alps, who knew lots of languages. Maybe someone who wanted to be a writer, as she did.
In truth, Elizabeth had occasionally wondered. But she loved Jeffrey, and she certainly didn't want to lose him! She'd just have to make an effort to make him realize how special he really was to her. In fact, she had gotten up half an hour early that morning so she could get to school before homeroom and meet Jeffrey at his locker. She wanted nothing more than to give him a hello kiss and to be reassured that things were still OK.
Elizabeth was waiting for Jeffrey ten minutes before the bell rang for homeroom. She had a note she had written him explaining about how much she loved him, and she knew she'd feel a lot better once she had given it to him.
To her surprise, Jeffrey and Enid walked in through the main door together. They were deep in conversation, and when they saw Elizabeth, both of them looked flustered and slightly guilty. "Hi, Liz!" Jeffrey exclaimed. "What are you doing here so early?"
Enid looked embarrassed. She and Elizabeth had smoothed things over since their disagreement on Friday night, but they hadn't seen very much of each other since.
